What Pickleball Facilities Should Verify Before Signing Off on New Lighting

A new pickleball lighting system should not be accepted simply because every luminaire turns on. For a facilities manager, acceptance is the point at which design assumptions become operating reality. Light levels, uniformity, glare control, aiming, controls, documentation, and maintainability all need to be checked against the agreed project requirements. A structured commissioning process protects the facility from discovering performance gaps after installers have left and normal programming has begun.

The Illuminating Engineering Society describes sports lighting design as more than an illuminance target. Its recommended practice addresses uniformity, glare, obtrusive light, controls, field measurements, and light-loss assumptions. U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) guidance similarly treats commissioning as verification that installed equipment and controls operate as specified. Facility acceptance should therefore connect the approved design, the installed system, field measurements, and the records handed to operations staff.

Confirm That the Installed System Matches the Approved Design

Begin with a physical and documentary comparison. Confirm luminaire model numbers, quantities, mounting locations, mounting heights, drivers, surge protection devices, control hardware, and circuit assignments. For adjustable floodlights, record the final aiming direction or aiming coordinates. Small substitutions or mounting changes can alter the result even when total connected wattage remains unchanged.

The facilities manager should receive an as-built fixture schedule and marked-up plan that can be reconciled with the approved photometric calculation. If an installer substituted a luminaire or optical distribution, request an updated calculation using the actual equipment. A product name that looks similar is not evidence that the light distribution, output, shielding, or control behavior is equivalent.

Next, inspect the installation under realistic conditions. Check that poles and brackets are secure, wiring and enclosures are complete, luminaires are not obstructed, and aiming has not shifted during tightening. Look for direct views of bright sources from typical player positions and for spill light at property lines, windows, roads, or neighboring courts. Document observations with locations and photographs so corrective work can be verified rather than discussed from memory.

Measure Performance and Test Every Control Sequence

Field measurements should follow the agreed measurement grid and operating conditions. Record the meter, calibration status, time, weather for outdoor courts, line voltage, control state, and whether the system has reached stable output. Compare measured values with the specified maintained criteria and the calculation, not with an isolated maximum reading. Average illuminance by itself can hide dark zones that affect visibility during fast lateral and overhead play.

Review minimum-to-average or other agreed uniformity metrics alongside average light level. Walk the courts from baselines, sidelines, transition areas, and adjacent circulation zones. If the project included limits for glare or spill light, verify those conditions using the method stated in the contract documents. Any shortfall should be linked to a corrective action—such as re-aiming, shielding, control adjustment, or an updated design review—rather than hidden by increasing output across the entire site.

Controls must be tested as an operating system. Run each scene and schedule, including normal play, cleaning, event, reduced-output, and shutdown modes where provided. Confirm zoning, manual overrides, timers, occupancy or daylight sensors, remote access, failure behavior, and restoration after a power interruption. DOE guidance emphasizes testing calibration, programming, sensor behavior, and time-based controls. A control system that is installed but not configured is not commissioned.

Close the Project With Records, Training, and a Recheck Plan

Acceptance should include an operations package that someone other than the installer can understand. At a minimum, collect as-built drawings, fixture and driver schedules, control narratives, final settings, aiming records, measurement results, warranties, spare-parts information, and maintenance instructions. Store an export or backup of programmable settings when the system permits it. Identify who holds administrator access and how credentials will be transferred when staff or service contractors change.

Provide hands-on training for the employees who open, close, clean, schedule, and troubleshoot the courts. Training should cover ordinary operation, overrides, alarms, safe shutdown, and the difference between a temporary workaround and a condition that requires technical service. Ask a staff member to perform the main tasks during training; observation is not the same as demonstrated competence.

Finally, establish a recheck date. Controls, aiming, surface reflectance, vegetation, adjacent development, and facility usage can change. Review complaints and maintenance records after the first operating period, then repeat critical checks when the venue is renovated, control software changes, or the operating schedule shifts. DOE guidance recommends planning for recommissioning because controls and building conditions evolve over time.

A useful acceptance decision is evidence-based: The installed equipment matches the design, measured performance meets the agreed criteria, control sequences work, deficiencies have owners and deadlines, and operations staff receive the information needed to maintain the result. That process turns a collection of luminaires into a manageable facility system.
