From construction sites and building maintenance to HVAC inspections and asset monitoring, drones are becoming valuable tools for facilities professionals. While adoption continues to grow, many misconceptions remain about what drones can do, where they provide the greatest value, and how they’re likely to shape the future of facilities management. For facilities professionals, the real value of drones lies not in the aircraft themselves, but in how they improve inspections, documentation, asset management, and decision-making.

Common Misconceptions About Drones in Facilities Management

One of the biggest misconceptions is that drones are here to replace the people doing the work. That’s simply not the case. Drones are tools that professionals can use to improve efficiency and safety wherever it makes sense to do so. They are most effective in the hands of people already working in these industries, or those with firsthand experience in these applications who now use drones to support them. Those who understand both how to use drones as a tool and how to operate them safely within the national airspace are the ones who can deliver the greatest value.

Another common misconception is that the drone itself is the solution. In reality, a drone is simply a tool for capturing data, making deliveries, or responding to emergencies, but it cannot do any of those things effectively on its own. It still requires people in the loop. An FPV (first-person view) drone may be exciting to fly, but the real value lies in the data or imagery it captures. A drone can carry a thermal camera, but its true value comes from helping facilities teams quickly identify roof leaks, equipment issues, or areas of heat loss that might otherwise go unnoticed. Likewise, a drone can capture thousands of images of a site, but the real benefit comes from a skilled operator who can process those images into a 2D or 3D map, identify meaningful data points, and turn that information into actionable insights that support better business decisions.

Delivery drones may seem loud or disruptive to some, but their value becomes clear when they can deliver a critical replacement part or much-needed supply in a fraction of the time. When every minute matters, receiving a delivery within 60 minutes instead of waiting for same-day or overnight shipping can save both time and money.

Where Drones Deliver the Greatest Value for Facilities Teams

Construction is one of the largest drone use cases today and one of the industries seeing the greatest benefits from drone technology. Drones are not only used to track construction progress over time, but also to measure material volumes through volumetric analysis. They can also serve a dual purpose by helping monitor site security when no one is on-site.

Building maintenance is another area where drones provide significant value. Using the same data-capture methods employed in construction monitoring, drones collect large numbers of overlapping images that can be processed into high-fidelity 3D models using photogrammetry and Gaussian splatting. These digital twins allow facilities professionals to inspect not only a building’s exterior, but also its interior when combined with data from ground cameras or drones designed to fly inside facilities. Organizations can also use these models to help track inventory and better manage assets.

For HVAC applications, thermal drones are commonly used to inspect exterior HVAC units and, in some cases, indoor systems depending on the size of the building and the system configuration. They provide a fast way to inspect rooftop equipment and identify obvious issues through thermal imaging. Beyond HVAC, thermal drones can also support energy efficiency audits by identifying areas of heat loss or other thermal anomalies on both the interior and exterior of larger buildings, as well as residential properties.

For professionals who invest the time, patience, and willingness to earn their FAA Remote Pilot Certification and develop practical flight skills, drones can make many aspects of their jobs easier, particularly when performing tasks that would otherwise be considered high risk. They also make it possible to capture valuable data during inspections, creating a documented record that can serve as evidence if questions or issues arise later. When paired with specialized software, drones also provide a more effective way to document progress, monitor assets, and track projects over time.

What’s Next for Drone Technology in the Skilled Trades

The next phase of drone adoption will be driven by higher levels of reliable autonomy, allowing users to operate and coordinate multiple aircraft at the same time rather than managing just one. As the technology continues to evolve, the focus will shift away from manual flight and toward flight planning, reusing automated flight paths for recurring inspections of assets and job sites, ensuring data is captured consistently, and streamlining the processing of that data so it can be used to make actionable business decisions.

Ultimately, drones are becoming another tool in the facilities management toolbox rather than a replacement for the people doing the work. As autonomy, imaging, and data processing capabilities continue to improve, the greatest opportunities will come from combining the technology with skilled professionals who know how to turn that information into better decisions.
